Cycles of Change Programs

Cycles of Change works to improve the health and sustainability of our neighborhoods by increasing the use of bicycles as transportation, connecting youth with the extraordinary living systems of our local area, and building a diverse community of visionary young leaders. The organization began in 1998 at Roosevelt Middle School in East Oakland and has grown steadily to become a team of ten program directors and eighteen youth interns operating programs at twelve East Bay public schools. Cycles’ programs are as follows:

  1. Beginners Urban Riding: Teaches the basics of safe urban riding to small groups of new students and community members.
  2. Advanced field trips program: Connects youth and community members to places of ecological, historical, and cultural significance, expanding the dimensions of their world.
  3. Summer touring program: After completing advanced field
trips, only the most advanced young students go bike touring for 5 to 8 days each year to different places in California.
  1. Urban Sustainability Program: We developed a six-week course for science classes called “Watershed Guides”
