About the Bikery
The Bikery is the Cycles of Change collectively run, not-for-profit community bike shop in Oakland! We are committed to making bikes accessible to everybody. We offer a range of affordable used bikes for sale, repairs, classes, and community events. We also have a repair space where you can sign up and use tools to work on your own bike, and get on the list to earn a bike if you are a youth ages 11-21! At The Bikery we believe bikes are a necessary and creative part of movement building as we work toward social and environmental justice in our community. The Bikery intentionally centers the leadership of people of color, youth, women, trans and genderqueer folk, and people from Oakland and the Bay Area. We are honored to be working together with interns and volunteers from local high schools to develop skills in bike mechanics, environmental stewardship, and experience participating in a collectively-run business. Please drop by to check us out and spread the word— join our community!
The shop offers the following services:
Used Bicycle Sales: Expert mechanics refurbish and sell bikes that have been donated in order to support the project. We can also create a custom bike for you! Bikery staff and interns work together to create new bikes for sale every day!
Bike Repairs: We offer affordable repairs that will meet all your needs.
Youth Earn-a-bike Program: We have a two-week long earn-a-bike program once a month where people, especially youth, can learn in-depth bike mechanics and build up a bike of their own by the end of the session.
Oakland UpCycle: Adult commuter program: A 4-hour safety course with on road training and access to a bike.
Community Repair Space: We have a number of work stands and a full range of bicycle tools that can be used in the shop by visitors working on their own repairs. Youth interns or staff are often available to answer questions and help folks learn to do repairs themselves.
Sugarbelly (currently on hiatus): A night for women, transgender and genderqueer folks to learn to work on bikes, eat yummies, make bike crafts & build community through bike love! 1st & 3rd Wednesdays from 6:30-9pm @ The Bikery, 1246 23rd Avenue Oakland 94606
Classes and Events: We have a range of ongoing classes and events offered to our community at low cost. Please send us an email to be on our mailing list, or check out our events calendar
Cycles of Change Oakland community Bike Shop serves as a place where you can donate/recycle your old bikes and parts. In fact, every bike that we have has been donated by someone like you! We are especially in need of usable bikes that can be earned by one of our youth or adult volunteers, or resold to support our operating expenses. Donations can be dropped off whenever the shop is open (see schedule above). Just bring them into the shop. If you need your donations picked up, “fill out this forms”: and we will schedule a pick-up time. Thank you!
The Bikery always needs volunteers to help refurbish bikes and contribute to the success of this amazing project. We are in need of volunteers who have the skills to: Repair donated bikes for sales, after-school programs and earn-a-bike classes Build bike storage racks out of recycled bike frame metal, salvaged wood, and other creatively repurposed material! Organize a bike drive in your neighborhood or at your work, to help us bring in more bikes to repair for our different programs. Spread the word to everyone you can! Review us on Yelp, write a story in a newspaper or magazine, talk to local schools, and other organizations, hang fliers, build new partnerships, etc… Help develop fundraising ideas for the project! Please get in touch with usand let us know what types of projects or skills you are able to contribute. Once you get in touch with us we will get you our volunteer application packet and get you started on a great volunteer experience!
